In his debut novel, former member of the Slovenian Special Forces Luka Zorenč describes his memories of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
What is it that sets a teenage rebel, with a few misdemeanours, on the road to becoming a Specialist who serves his country and saves lives? Luka decided to do voluntary military service in Slovenia after a fight between fans. His path then took him from joining the regular army, through selection, basic training, to being accepted into a special unit. Luka's military career took him on missions to Kosovo, Mali and Iraq, and to further training in the United States. The book is written from the perspective of a soldier in the field, not from the headquarters, and is honest and a little critical. It is the first book of its kind to describe the daily life of a member of the Slovenian Armed Forces. The story is topical because it is set in modern times.
Ris is recommended reading for all those considering military service, as it gives a good introduction to the Slovenian Armed Forces. It was very well received by readers, sold out in eleven days and has been reprinted several times. The book has also been translated into English. The author is writing a sequel about the life of a mercenary and a guards instructor in Africa.
Excerpt from the book:
There was no secret behind it all. We were just everyday people doing everyday things, even when it was raining, when it was cold, when we were sleepless, when we were hungry. Sometimes we did the same in the sunshine, full and rested.
"Being in the Special Forces does not mean doing special things. Being in the Special Forces means doing the mundane things extremely well, whenever and under whatever conditions it is required," a wise soldier once told me.
